City Osteopaths Newsletter

August 2010

Welcome to our midwinter newsletter. We trust you are keeping warm and well!

You may have noticed we have a new street sign with a blackboard so messages can change weekly.
This is to help inform people about what we can do to improve their health and well being.

New Clinic

If you have trouble getting into town for an appointment we have a new Eastern Suburbs clinic; City Osteopaths – Breaker Bay. Purpose built, with a glorious view over the sea, it currently offers osteopathic treatment on alternate Friday and Saturday mornings. Bookings to see Melanie are made as usual through reception on 4991439.

Home Visits for Newborns

Jude is able to visit newborns at home or in hospital to assist mothers who may have difficulty bringing their baby into the city for treatment. Anyone wanting Jude to visit a newborn can call her on 04 9774684 to arrange an appointment.

Osteopathy and Post Graduate Study

Our osteopaths have been doing plenty of post graduate study so far this year. Alana recently returned from five days of cranial nerve study with Professor Willard from the U.S.A. Liz has recently completed a holistic rehabilitation course. Melanie was in Australia in May for Phase Six of Biodynamics of Osteopathy and before this did Dave Liow’s refresher of musculoskeletal corrective exercises for the whole body. Jane has completed Phase Two of the Biodynamics of Osteopathy and the Phillip Beech Erectocise Exercises Course. Earlier this year Jude Lloyd attended a seminar about diagnosing and prescribing exercises for shoulder problems.

Vianney is attending a course on digestive system disorders at the Barral Institute in August and also has very good results with treating endometriosis. Also in August we have another French osteopath joining our team – Helene Gois, who is moving down from the far north of New Zealand.

Naturopathy and Fertility

Kimberley Taylor our naturopath, is working regularly with couples who are wanting to conceive, or once pregnant want the best of health for their growing baby through optimal nutrition and the right supplements.

Homeopathy and Cancer Research

Recently a Journal of Oncology found that homeopathic remedies may hold benefits for the treatment of breast cancer.

The study is significant because –

a) It was carried out at a top cancer research hospital in the United States.

b) It was reported in the International Journal of Oncology – a highly respected, peer reviewed, mainstream medical journal.

c) The homeopathic remedies were tested on breast cancer cells ‘in vitro’ – i.e. in a laboratory petrie dish – not on patients – which means there can have been no ‘placebo effect’.

The researchers concluded, “the ultra diluted natural homeopathic remedies investigated in this study offer the promise of being effective preventative and/or therapeutic agents for breast cancer and worthy of further study.

We have two wonderful homeopaths, Nicki Walker and Vanessa Young. Vanessa is also trained to use muscle testing to test for environmental influences and confirm the correct remedy.

Acupuncture and Fertility

We have two lovely acupuncturists in our practice – Janine Nana and Sharlene McInnes. Many of Janine’s clients come for fertility reasons. She can help them when trying to conceive naturally or using assisted fertility techniques. Janine also does pre and post embryo replacement acupuncture onsite at Fertility Associates and is a founding member of Wellington’s Fertility Acupuncture and Childbirth Team (FACT). Sharlene enjoys treating a wide range of injuries using Tuina (traditional Chinese massage) and acupuncture to decrease pain and improve her patient’s health.

As always, if you have any queries, the practitioners are happy to speak with you. Also we can be asked to give talks on our special areas of study to interested groups. In July Melanie gave a talk to the NZ College of Midwives about osteopathic treatment of pregnant women and babies.

Feedback and Referrals

Your feedback about any aspect of our practice is always welcome. To help this process we now have feedback forms and a suggestion box on the main pillar at the front desk in reception. We would like to add patient testimonials to our website, so if you can help us, please write down your positive experiences at City Osteopaths and hand it to Reception. Thank you.

Our team at City Osteopaths want to thank you for referring your family, friends and colleagues.
